  31. NEW FEATURES IN ACROBAT AMBER READER 
  32. ====================================
  33. Amber is an update to Acrobat Reader with several new features:
  34.  
  35. Integration of PDF viewing into Netscape Navigator 2.0 You click 
  36. on a link to a PDF file in Navigator and Amber displays the file within 
  37. the Netscape window -- no more context switch to launch Acrobat as a 
  38. helper application.
  39.  
  40. Navigation among PDF, HTML, and other web content 
  41. transparently by integrating with Netscape's navigation functions
  42.  -- Go Back, etc. 
  43.  
  44. PDF documents can be viewed a page at a time over the web. 
  45. You don't wait for the whole document to download before display.
  46.  
  47. Progressive display of the PDF file, so you see the text first,
  48. then images, then embedded fonts.
  49.  
  50. Font blitting -- when viewed over the web, embedded fonts display
  51. first as substitution fonts while the embedded outline is retrieved
  52. then "blitted" onscreen for absolute fidelity.

  54. Dockable Toolbar within the Netscape window.

  62. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
  63. =========================
  64. **The Amber Reader is currently only available for Windows 95 and 
  65. Windows NT**
  66.  
  67. - To install Acrobat Amber Reader on your hard drive, from the Windows 
  68. Program Manager, double click on My Computer to open the 
  69. My Computer window.
  70. - Download the Amber self-extractiong archive Amber32D1.exe
  71. to a temporary location (eg \TEMP).
  72. - double-click: [drive]:\Amber32D1.exe
  73. - The file  will expand the installation files into
  74. the temp directory.
  75. - Locate and double-click setup.exe  
  76. - Follow the instructions on your screen.
  77. - Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free hard disk space.

  79. If you see the installer message "Warning! Setup couldn't install
  80. Netscape plugin (NPPDF32.DLL). Failed to locate Netscape Plugins directory."
  81. The installer was unable to install the plugin necessary for Acrobat to
  82. communicate with Netscape.
  83. - Make sure Netscape Navigator 2.0 B3 or greater is installed on your
  84. system.
  85. - Locate the Netscape plugin NPPDF32.DLL in the [drive]:\Acroweb directory.
  86. - Copy  [drive]:\Acroweb\NPPDF32.DLL to \Netscape\Program\plugins

  89. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  91. - 386- or 486-based personal computer (486 recommended)
  92. - Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT
  93. - 4 MB application RAM
  94. - 3 MB hard disk space, plus 2 MB TEMP space available
  95. - 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive
  96. - Netscape Navigator 2.0 B3 for web integration

  99. VIEWING PDF PAGE-AT-A-TIME OVER THE WEB
  100. =======================================
  101. Best viewing performance for PDF documents over the web comes
  102. from optimized PDF files and a server with the ability to byteserve
  103. the files. The optimized PDF format and byteserver protocol are not 
  104. yet final, so we have provided a set of demonstration files on
  105. Adobe's server to allow you to test the page-at-a-time performance
  106. for yourself. See http://www.adobe.com/Amber 
  107.  
  108. Any nonoptimized PDF file can be viewed in the Netscape window 
  109. (without page-at-a-time display) with the Amber Reader
  110. and Netscape Navigator 2.0 version B3 or better.
  111.

  113. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  114. ================

  118. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  119. Installer message "Warning! Setup couldn't install
  120. Netscape plugin (NPPDF32.DLL). Failed to locate Netscape Plugins directory."
  121. See instructions for manually installing the Netscape Shim in the
  122. Installing Acrobat Reader section above.

  124. Viewing PDF files within Netscape Navigator
  125. - The Netscape Plugin NPPDF32.DLL must be properly installed. See above.
  126. - When viewing PDF files within Navigator in 256-color mode, interacting
  127. with Netscape controls (menus, dialog boxes, etc.) may cause temporary
  128. disturbance of the PDF color palette. Dismiss the Netscape control and 
  129. go to another page in the PDF file to refresh the screen.
  130.  
  131. Viewing PDF Files Page-at-a-time Over the Web
  132. - Requires a web server with the ability to byteserve PDF files and
  133. Acrobat Amber-optimized PDF files. With this release, optimized PDF
  134. files are only available on Adobe's web site. See the section
  135. Viewing PDF Files Page-at-a-time Over the Web above for more detail.
  136. - Low speed and poor-quality network connections can cause the Amber Reader
  137. to hang with a "Document Done" message in the Reader window footer.
  138. Quit the Reader and try again to access the document from Netscape.
  139. - Amber Reader times out after 5 minutes when accessing PDF files over
  140. the Web. No error message is displayed. If the document has not displayed
  141. after 5 minutes, Quit the Reader and try again.
  142. - If you do several mouse actions and then hit the Netscape Stop button,
  143. the application may hang.
  144.  
  145. Weblink Plug-in
  146. - An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  147. download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name. Acrobat 
  148. Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this document. 
  149. File does not begin with %PDF-".
  150. - If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  151. Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  152. your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  153. not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  154. in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request.
  155. - URLs do not display in the Amber Reader footer within the Navigator
  156. window.
  157. - Navigator runs hidden when launched from a Weblink in a local PDF file.
  158. - Base URLs are not functional in this release -- enter the absolute URL.
  159.  
  160. Navigation from Netscape
  161. - Go Back currently returns you to the first page of a PDF file rather
  162. than the page you left.
  163. - Double-clicking the Netscape navigation buttons (Back, Forward) before 
  164. the Reader has displayed the first page of a PDF file can cause the 
  165. Reader to hang.
  166. - Setting the Netscape Cache to 0 may cause Amber Reader or Netscape to
  167. hang, or the PDF document may fail to open.
  168.  
  169. Local File Access
  170. PDF files larger than 4MB will not open from the local disk.
  171.  
  172. PDF Embedded in HTML Files
  173. - Printing the embedded PDF is not yet enabled. The HTML document
  174. will print with a blank space in place of the embedded PDF.
  175. - You cannot currently reliably embed more than one PDF file or 
  176. very large PDF files in an HTML document.
  177.  
  178. Secure Files
  179. The Amber Reader cannot currently accept a password for a secure
  180. document over the web. Choose Save As to download the PDF file to 
  181. disk, and open the file locally to enter the password.
  182.  
  183. System Shutdown
  184. You cannot shut down your system while Amber Reader is running. Quit Amber
  185. before selecting Shut Down.
  186.  
  187. Features Not Available in This Release
  188. - Copy/Paste 
  189. - Acrobat keyboard shortcuts. The Netscape 
  190. Navigator API does not yet support this functionality.  
  191. - You cannot mail a PDF document as an attachment from Navigator.
  192. - PDF Document Info from the Navigator window.

  198. HOW TO REPORT BUGS

  200. You may report problems to Adobe with the Bug Report form on Adobe's

  203. Check the Known Problems section to see whether your problem has
  204. already been reported. Please provide as much detail as possible about 
  205. the problem you encounter. Detailed instructions are available on the 
  206. web site.

  208. Due to the volume of reports we receive, Adobe cannot respond directly
  209. to individual bug reports. We do screen each report, and make every
  210. effort to keep the Known Problems list up to date. We appreciate your
  211. assistance in making the Acrobat Amber Reader a top quality product.

  214. ELECTRONIC END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT

  217. ELECTRONIC END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT
  218. FOR UNRELEASED SOFTWARE
  219.  
  220. NOTICE TO USER:
  221. THIS IS A CONTRACT.  BY INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE YOU ACCEPT ALL THE TERMS
  222. AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT.

  224. This Adobe Systems Incorporated ("Adobe") End User License Agreement
  225. for Unreleased Software accompanies an unreleased (Alpha or Beta) version
  226. of an Adobe software product and related explanatory materials ("Software").
  227. The term Software shall also include any upgrades, modified versions or 
  228. updates of the Software licensed to you by Adobe.  This copy of the Software
  229. is licensed to you as the end user.  Please read this Agreement carefully. 
  230.  
  231. Adobe grants to you a nonexclusive license to use the Software for
  232. evaluation and trial use purposes only, provided that you agree to
  233. the following:
  234.  
  235. 1.  Use of the Software.
  236. - You may install the Software in a single location on a hard disk or other
  237. storage device; install and use the Software on a file server for use on a
  238. network for the purpose of installation onto hard disks or other storage
  239. devices or use of the Software over such network; and make backup copies of
  240. the Software.
  241.  
  242. - You may make unlimited copies of the Software and give copies to other
  243. persons or entities so long as (i) the use of such copies is for evaluation
  244. and trial purposes only and (ii) all copies contain this Agreement and the
  245. same copyright and other proprietary notices that appear on or in the
  246. Software.
  247.  
  248. 2.  Copyright. The Software is owned by Adobe and its suppliers, and its
  249. structure, organization and code are the valuable trade secrets of Adobe
  250. and its suppliers.  The Software is also protected by United States
  251. Copyright Law and International Treaty provisions.  You agree not to modify, adapt,
  252. translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or otherwise attempt
  253. to discover the source code of the Software.  You may use trademarks only
  254. to identify printed output produced by the Software, in accordance with
  255. accepted trademark practice, including identification of trademark ownerÆs
  256. name.  Such use of any trademark does not give you any rights of ownership
  257. in that trademark.  Except as stated above, this Agreement does not grant
  258. you any intellectual property rights in the Software.
  259.  
  260. 3.  Cooperation with Adobe.  During the term of this Agreement, you will
  261. provide feedback to Adobe regarding testing and use of the Software,
  262. including error or bug reports.
  263.  
  264. 4.  No Warranty.  You acknowledge that the Software is a pre release
  265. version, does not represent final product from Adobe, and may contain bugs,
  266. errors and other problems that could cause system failures. Consequently,
  267. the Software is provided to you AS IS, and Adobe disclaims any warranty
  268. or liability obligations to you of any kind.   You acknowledge that Adobe
  269. has not promised or guaranteed to you that such Software will be announced
  270. or made available to anyone in the future, that Adobe has no express or
  271. implied obligation to you to announce or introduce the Software and that
  272. Adobe may not introduce a product similar or compatible with the Software.
  273. Accordingly, you acknowledge that any research or development that you 
  274. perform regarding the Software or any product associated with the Software 
  275. is done entirely at your  own risk.  ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT AND 
  276. CANNOT WARRANT THE PERFORMANCE OR RESULTS YOU MAY OBTAIN BY USING THE 
  277. SOFTWARE OR DOCUMENTATION.  ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS MAKE NO WARRANTIES, 
  278. EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS TO NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS, 
  279. MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.  IN NO EVENT 
  280. WILL ADOBE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, 
  281. INCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST 
  282. SAVINGS, EVEN IF AN ADOBE REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE 
  283. POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY.  
  284. Some states or jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation 
  285. of incidental, consequential or special damages, or the exclusion of 
  286. implied warranties or limitations on how long an implied warranty may 
  287. last, so the above limitations may not apply to you.
  288.  
  289. 5.  Termination of Use.  Upon receipt of a later unreleased version of 
  290. the Software or a publicly released commercial version of the Software, 
  291. you agree to destroy all earlier unreleased versions of the Software 
  292. received from Adobe and to abide by the terms of the End User License 
  293. Agreement for any such later versions of the Software.  Notwithstanding 
  294. anything in this paragraph to the contrary, if you are located outside 
  295. the United States of America, you agree that you will return or destroy 
  296. all unreleased versions of the Software within thirty (30) days of the 
  297. completion of your testing of the Software if such date is earlier than 
  298. the date for AdobeÆs first commercial shipment of the publicly released 
  299. (commercial) Software.
  300.  
  301. 5. Governing Law and General Provisions.  This Agreement will be governed 
  302. by the laws of the State of California, U.S.A., excluding the application 
  303. of its conflicts of law rules.  This Agreement will not be governed by the 
  304. United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of 
  305. Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.  If any part of 
  306. this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect the 
  307. validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid and 
  308. enforceable according to its terms.  You agree that the Software will 
  309. not be shipped, transferred or exported into any country or used in any 
  310. manner prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act or any 
  311. other export laws, restrictions or regulations.  This Agreement shall 
  312. automatically terminate upon failure by you to comply with its terms.  
  313. This Agreement may only be modified in writing signed by an authorized 
  314. officer of Adobe.
  315.  
  316. 6. Notice to Government End Users.  If this product is acquired under 
  317. the terms of a:  GSA contract- Use, reproduction or disclosure is subject 
  318. to the restrictions set forth in the applicable ADP Schedule contract;  
  319. DoD contract- Use, duplication or disclosure by the Government is subject 
  320. to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of 252.227-7013;  
  321. Civilian agency contract- Use, reproduction, or disclosure is subject to 
  322. 52.227-19 (a) through (d) and restrictions set forth in the accompanying 
  323. end user agreement.
